Senate Democrats Advance Legislation To Ensure Fair Local Spending For Charter Schools

SB 475 would ensure locally-approved charter schools are fairly considered against public schools for local education spending

Currently, traditional public schools get priority for ESPLOST expenditures while charter schools often receive little to no funding

Atlanta, Ga. — Senate Bill 475, led by Senator RaShaun Kemp (D-Atlanta), advanced out of the Senate Education & Youth Committee. The bill would ensure locally-approved charter schools are fairly considered against public schools for local spending from the Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (ESPLOST).

“Whether a child goes to a charter school or a public school should not determine the quality of education they receive. SB 475 levels the playing field and ensures every child has the opportunity to succeed in the classroom,” Senator RaShaun Kemp said. “This bill sets our children up for success by making sure their schools have a fair shot at education funding. When we invest in students, we invest in our future.”

  • Require local boards of education to treat locally-approved charter schools no less favorably than other local schools with respect to the expenditure of the proceeds of a special purpose local option sales tax for education.

Senator RaShaun Kemp is available for comment.
