Senate Democrats Advance Legislation Improving Pensions for State Retirees

SB 339 would provide cost-of-living adjustments to state retiree benefits every six months

Atlanta, Ga. — Senate Bill 339, led by Senator Nan Orrock (D-Atlanta), passed out of the Senate Retirement Committee with a unanimous vote. The bill would restore regular cost-of-living adjustments to retirees in the Georgia Employees' Retirement System and help relieve the burden of the affordability crisis.

“The affordability crisis is front and center for state retirees who have seen the buying power of their monthly pension shrink year after year. SB339 would fulfill the commitment made to them for their lifetime of service to Georgians. Rather than enjoying their golden years, our retirees have been forced to make painful decisions, forgoing their medicines, and choosing which bills to pay. Many have to rely on their children and grandchildren to make ends meet,” Senator Nan Orrock said. “Senate Bill 339 rights that wrong and allows them to focus on enjoying their retirement, rather than juggling their pills and bills. Passing this legislation tells our retirees that help is on the way.”

Read about Senate Bill 339 HERE or below:

  • Provide semiannual postretirement benefit adjustments for all beneficiaries of the Employees' Retirement System of Georgia.

  • Stipulate when those adjustments can be reduced or paused, such as if state revenues drop.

  • Extend eligibility for adjustments to retirees who weren’t previously eligible.

Senator Nan Orrock is available for comment.
