Sen. Minority Leader Jones II: “Senate GOP Not Fit to Govern”
Senate Republicans Sunset QR Code, Do Nothing for Two Years, Georgia Elections Now in Chaos
Atlanta, Ga. — Sen. Minority Leader Harold V. Jones II issued the following statement on Senate Republicans’ failure to pass elections reform.
“Two years ago, Senate Republicans forced SB 189 through and got rid of the QR code. That gave them two years to prepare a new system. They did nothing — other than pass a Senate Bill after Crossover Day last year in violation of their own rules.
“Meanwhile, House Republicans and Democrats passed meaningful bipartisan paper ballot legislation last week. Senate Republicans refused to bring it up. That’s because they thrive in chaos and confusion, and they only win by stoking the fires of conspiracy theorists. Georgians should remember this moment for the rest of the year: Senate Republicans aren’t fit to govern, and they don’t care about governing. They only care about raw power, and they will sacrifice anything, everything, and everyone to get it,” Minority Leader Jones said.
Timeline:
Sine Die 2024 – SB 189 passes, sunsetting QR code on July 1, 2026
2025 LD 1-38 – Senate Republicans do nothing
2025 LD 39 – Senate Republicans pass SB 214 on LD 39, violating clear text of Senate Rule 4-2.9 (a).
2026 LD 1-40 – Senate Republicans pass several sales tax increases, cut taxes for the richest Georgians, gavel out. No meaningful election legislation passes. 2026 elections left in chaos.
