Jones II on Callais: “GOP Will Lock Themselves Into Power Against Our Will”
“Awful Decision Will Undermine Black and Minority Political Power for Generations.”
Atlanta, Ga. — Sen. Minority Leader Harold V. Jones II released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s Callais decision:
“The Roberts Court’s continued assault on the Voting Rights Act results today in an awful decision that will undermine Black and minority political power for generations.
“Just a few months ago, our Caucus offered the Henry McNeal Turner Voting Rights Act to protect Georgians from the Court gutting Section 2 of the federal Voting Rights Act. Georgia Republicans failed to pass it — or even give it a hearing. This tells the whole story: if you care about protecting voting rights, you must elect Democrats."
“Protecting voting rights is now more urgent than ever. Under this decision, state protections might be all we have left, especially with this far right Supreme Court. Electing a Democratic Governor or flipping state legislative chambers in November is the only way we can stop the GOP power grabs allowed under Callais.
“Without Democrats in power, Republicans will steamroll the opposition and lock themselves in power, no matter what the people want. That's on the line this November. Those are the stakes of this year’s elections. Let’s stay focused, keep working, and put a Democrat in the Governor’s Mansion and flip at least one legislative chamber blue. That’s how we stop the GOP from locking themselves in power for generations against our will."
The Senate Minority Leader is available for comment.
